Comparative Study of Horticultural Terminology between South and North Korea

Abstract
In order to provide the basis for unifying terminology and for activating scientific cooperation in the field of horticulture, differences in its terminology were investigated between South and North Korea. The terminology used in North Korea reflects many characteristics of its language. Among others, major characteristics of the North Korean language include such things as: (1) writing only horizontally, (2) ignoring ¢¥Du-Um¢¥ principles, and (3) not allowing foreign characters (e.g., Chinese) in writing. The unique terminology characteristics have both positive and negative aspects. Some positive aspects include the maximum use of native and friendly terms. In contrast, negative aspects include the use of crude terms and a preference for strong accents. Because the results of this study indicate the existence of language gaps between the two Koreas, a unification process for terminology appears to be in great demand.
